The Emergency Responder is the Charity’s highest level of trained volunteer who is not already a medical professional (Ambulance Staff or Doctor) and is the most dynamic of our regular schemes. The volunteers within our Emergency Responder schemes predominantly hail from the Armed Forces hence these schemes are usually centred around military units. Notwithstanding this, a number of non-military volunteers are accepted every year into these schemes on a merit basis. These schemes have the full support of the MoD as a recognised voluntary activity.

These schemes see the volunteers giving their time to crew a marked response car in a dynamic form deploying across the NHS Ambulance Trust area. This often sees these teams working many miles from their “home base” serving numerous communities. To prevent confusion with full-time ambulance staff our volunteers wear distinctive jackets with the Charity logo and the legend “EMERGENCY RESPONDER”.

The commitment of required of these volunteers is exceptionally high with at least three shifts a month for non-driver qualified personnel and four for driver qualified volunteers. There is also a commitment to attend a one-week medical course and a driving course that may last up to three-weeks. The selection process for this role can take several months to complete and involves an interview and concludes with a satisfactory Criminal Records Check. If you feel you have what it takes then please express an interest below.

Due to the high number of applications that we receive for England, we are currently only recruiting for areas where there are current First Response Schemes. We are however creating new schemes in Scotland. Please check out the First Response locations map before applying. National First Response mapGoogle Map Marker
